Serveral different forms of literature make up the constituent parts of Matthew : wisdom sayings, genealogies, discourses, parables, and so forth. The most important receive brief treatment in the commentary, the most extensive note being devoted to parables. It is a “Gospel”, a presentation of the “good news” of Jesus the Messiah. | The fivefold structure of Matthew deal with the ethics of the Kingdom, mission, redemptive history, church discipline and eschatology. | The author uses the genre of an ancient biography to express his theological and pastoral concerns
Source |
Matthew used Mark as his basic narrative source and also a third document, called Q , which consisted mainly or entirely of sayings of Jesus. | Matthew used not only Mark but Q (however Q is conceived), probably other sources, and perhaps his own memory as well | The author’s sources are traditions about Jesus, Know to us as Q (material common to Matthew and Luke but not to Mark), the Gospel of Mark, and M (material unique to Matthew)
